Latinos Role in a Presidential Race Already Heading for Finish Line (Part I)

POTUS

About now even Yogi Berra might say “I never seen a game over til it’s over til this one.”

As the fastest paced and highest money raising season ever heads into the shortest “dog days of the summer before a presidential election ever” the dividing lines are set and the jockeying for position is being finalized.  The only question left is “who will Hillary Clinton beat” as she becomes the first woman “commandher in chief” of the USA. It only took 228 years but this writer (not for Hillary)  believes (barring an act of God) the die is cast. Latinos have a stake, but their low though growing voter participation level indicates they are not yet smack in the middle of this national pasttime.

Observations: Hillary’s timing is as impeccable as her political acumen and flawless organizational execution. Team Cleentohn owns and makes the Dems process rules. This writer favors Obama but has been around the track enough to know the fat lady will be singing in early and late 08.  Hillary’s summer “surge” has rendered Barack’s talents and money ineffective and unless he wages a miraculous primary and shakes the rookie moves – he will soon be studying lessons learned. Bill Clinton’s memory and popularity remains fresh among Latinos who favor Hillary four to one.

At the California Democratic convention in San Diego one saw a strong Democratic field.  From skilled veterans like Senators Gravel and Biden, forever running “farther left than anyone” Kucinich to “I’m not running for VP” perennial Latino vice-presidential candidate Bill Richardson all were impressive. Self proclaimed top choice John Edwards continues to wrestle with the “s and b” issues – sincerity and believability as he rails to become the champion of the poor.

On the other side Rudy Giuliani is the best fodder for Hillary but Republican conservatives still don’t buy his values, except for Californians.  Mitt Romney’s top tier rise has been somewhat surprising.  His real test is if America is ready for a member of the Church of Latter Day Saints/Mormon as president. Having been governor of liberal, Catholic Massachusetts gives him formidable credentials. He needs to avoid gaffes like the one in Iowa equating his sons campaign time to military front line service.

Former presumptive nominee Senator John McCain’s Iraq War gamble has yet to pay off.  The squandered lead and a treasury on life support caused a team shakeup. His only chance is to  “come back” with a vengeance.  Hunter and Gingritch with their immigration rants will take up the rear of the cross country campaign migration. They will serve Hillary well with Latinos and both will have time next year to find “work Americans won’t do.” Huckabee recently enjoyed his fifteen minutes of fame.  The dark horse is former Senator and screen actor Fred Thompson. If/when he announces he is the only Republican who could rally his side and keep the Democrats up late at night.   He is yet to raise real money and Dems are rummaging his lobbying history just in case.
