NEW LEADER OF DEMOCRATIC NATIONAL COMMITTEE HISPANIC CAUCUS

Vienna, Va.,_ The Hispanic Caucus has elected Ramona Martinez of Denver, Colorado as chair and Eliseo Roques of San Juan, Puerto Rico as Vice-Chair. Martinez vowed to increase the number of Latinos voting and going to the 2008 convention in Denver as delegates. She said, “If we are going to show strength as a community we have to increase our numbers. We had 400 delegates in 2000 and 600 in 2004. We have to proactively take the next step to make sure we are well represented.”  The former Denver City Council member has an extensive history in state and national politics.

The DNC selected Denver to showcase the southwest potential to become the “new south” in their column and to increase Hispanic participation in next year’s election.  Depending on how he does in the primaries and if the nominee picks him for VP, this should bode well for New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson!
