SEVILLA 3-2 FENERBAHCE (FENERBAHCE WINS SHOOTOUT 3-2) Estadio Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan

One of three squads from Spain’s La Liga was sent home after overcoming a 3-2 deficit on aggregate goals from the first leg match up against Turkish side Fenerbahce. With the overall score still tied at 5 after overtime it all came down to a 5 on 5 shootout. After the first two shooters the shoot out was deadlocked at 1 all, however only one of Sevilla’s next three shooters could find net leaving the defending UEFA Cup Champions dreaming of last season.

FC BARCELONA 1-0 CELTIC Estadio Camp Nou

After Barca went ahead on aggregate goals 3-2 on the road in the first leg this match up left little to be decided. The 2006 Champions League winners were all for it after a tough weekend in La Liga. With Barca’s Xavi scoring from close range within the first 5 minutes of play the Catalan Giants were ready to just sit back and wait for the clock to run out. However the biggest bit of news from this game came in the 35th minute when Argentine striker and “SI Latino’s Sportsman of the Year” Lionel Messi went off weeping in frustration after he appeared to injure the same leg that kept him out for a good stretch earlier this season. Luckily for Barcelona they added French forward Thierry Henry this off season.

On another note two of Mexico’s best, Giovanni Dos Santos and Rafa Marquez were left out of the squad due to injuries and Argentina’s Gabi Milito was switched out for Edmilson due to a bad night with a fever. The good news for all three players is that the squad has moved on to the Quarterfinals which gives them all time to get back to fit and rejoin the team.

MANCHESTER UNITED 1-0 LYON Old Trafford

Manchester United continues it’s attempt to reach the finals after they came so close a year ago. Christiano Ronaldo scored the game’s only goal in the 41st minute which also happened to be the player’s 30th goal. After the two teams tied the first leg 1-1 Ronaldo’s goal made the difference and carried his team to the next round.

With half of the field set for the quarterfinals three of the final four spots will be decided tomorrow and the last spot will be fought for on March 11. (Agg. in brackets)
