Hugol No Mas?

Hugol No Mas?

After this weekends big win over Haiti proved to not be big enough for the Mexican U23 side, head man Hugo Sanchez may be in trouble.

The Mexicans came out stronger against Haiti than they had against any other side in the tournament winning 5-1, in a soccer match.

However they fell one goal short of having a chance to move on to the next round of the CONCACAF U23 Olympic Qualification Tournament. With Canada having earlier in the day beat Group B winner Guatemala 5-0 (some may say that Guatemala played less than there best to ensure an easier opponent gets on to the next round). With tie breakers for the Group stage coming down to Goal Differential, the Mexicans fell one goal short.

Now that Mexico has been knocked out of a chance to go to the Olympics many fans, and Newspapers, are calling for Hugo Sanchez to resign. Mexico’s leading sports newspaper Record had this to say -

‘Hugo, have some dignity and quit. Don’t bring on any more shame,’

Those are some pretty harsh words for a man who was so loved and revered during his playing days. Sanchez’ contract runs through the 2010 World Cup in South Africa and that is where he wants to finish his tenure as Mexico’s head coach.

As for the rest of the field at the Olympic qualification tournament, which has been played here in the U.S., the United States and Honduras advance to the semi-finals out of Group A and Guatemala and Canada move on from Group B.

The semi’s will be played March 20 in Nashville Tennessee with Guatemala taking on Honduras at 5:00pm est and the United States taking on Canada at 8 pm. The winners from these games earn an automatic berth into the Beijing Olympic games in August.
