Governator Starting to “Get” Latinos
Sacramento, Ca.,_ It took him a term and a few years to get it but California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger is “getting” Latinos in his state. After many years of Republicans and even Democrat Gray Davis failing to appoint Latinos to the bench (insiders say his chief of staff was anti Latino) Latino attorneys can finally believe they will be selected as judges. If the Governator pushes it he might get close to the numbers appointed by Jerry Brown in the 1970’s.
His judicial appointments are running at 22% people of color which represents a real advancement. He has already surpassed the eight year numbers of Republicans Pete Wilson and George Deukmejian. Credit is being given to his hiring one year ago of Sharon Major-Lewis, an African American, as Judicial Appointments Secretary. Since she began her tenure minority judicial applications have risen significantly.
