American Cancer Society announces “Estamos contigo” campaign

Washington, DC.,_ For many years Latinos, like all people, have seen their incidents of cancer rising. In this case the drive is right on target. Virtually no Latino family has gone without the illness and suffering associated with losing loved ones to this killer disease. “Estamos contigo” is a multi-media public service campaign to increase levels of awareness and use of the Cancer Society as a resource for information, help and support. For a host of reasons Latinos have above average chances of being diagnosed with cancer at later, less treatable stages. As a result their survival level is less after being diagnosed. Research shows cancer is the second leading cause of death among Hispanics, and half of the Latina women and one third of Latino men will be diagnosed in their lifetimes.

The 60 and 30 second advertising on radio and television will be in English and Spanish and others will appear in print, outdoor and internet ads.

For further information call the Cancer Society at 1 800 227-2345 or see http://www.cancer.org/espanol and for goodness sakes get our family members in for their annual checkups, pap smears and breast exams.
