Big Papi “Curse” sells for 175k
The David Ortiz jersey that was recently dug up under two feet of concrete at the new Yankee Stadium, was sold for $175k for charity.
The jersey was placed in the concrete by a Red Sox fan from Brooklyn in an attempt to curse the Yankees in their new home stadium.
After the jersey was pulled up the Yankees gave it to the Jimmy Fund, a charity for cancer patients and their families. The week long Ebay auction ended with over 280 bids, the winning bid was for $175,100. The Jimmy Fund didn’t reveal the name of the winner.
That person, whose screen name is 2004carman, did not immediately respond to an e-mail requesting comment. The winner will also receive a new Ortiz jersey and two tickets to a Red Sox game.
Mike Andrews, The Jimmy Fund chairman and former Red Sox second baseman, said the charity was “absolutely thrilled.”
“We are grateful for the generous bid and extend our deep gratitude to the New York Yankees and the Boston Red Sox for coming together again in the fight against cancer,” he said in a statement.
It’s nice to see that these two heated rivals were able to put aside their differences, and hatred, for a good cause. I’m sure the Jimmy Fund will make great use of the money and 2004carman will enjoy what they won.
Sports and any other games are about friendship even though on the
field they struggle to win.
