Latinos call on Arizona Governor to veto immigration policing
Phoenix, Az.,_ In the aftermath of the unprecedented and on-going immigration neighborhood raids in this state’s capital city, Latino leaders are calling on Gov. Janet Napolitano to veto a bill requiring local police to cooperate with federal immigration authorities.
Leaders of the groups Tonatierra and Somos America believe House Bill 2807 would add to the current atmosphere of fear caused by on-going racial profiling. Group leaders Salvador Reza, Lydia Guzman and Hector Yturralde claim the measure will fuel the flames of discord and racial intolerance.
The governor has until Monday to act on the bill or it will become law even if she chooses to ignore it, which is what she is expected to do. It cleared the Arizona legislature by a 2:1 margin.
