Montoya comes up short at Talladega

Kyle Busch earned an unexpected win yesterday at Talladega motor speedway.

Busch won the Aaron’s 499 after a 12 car crash on the last lap ended the race.

Busch was leading the Aaron’s 499 on the last lap, the potential sucker hole at Talladega, but a 12-car crash behind him brought out the caution and ended the race.

The green-white-checkered rule doesn’t apply if the caution comes out after the white flag.It was a bit of a downer for the final seconds, but this race was Dega the way you expect it to be: three-wide racing, plenty of passing and some wild wrecking.

It was a tough last few laps for Busch as Colombian driver Juan Pablo Montoya was closing in on him.

The final-lap crash was bad news for Juan Pablo Montoya and Hamlin. Montoya was right on Busch’s bumper as they headed down the backstretch. Could he have passed Busch’s No. 18 Toyota heading for the finish line?

“I don’t know,” Montoya said. “You’ll have to ask Denny.”A driver needs a push from behind to make a move, but Hamlin is Busch’s teammate at Joe Gibbs Racing. Would he go with Montoya?

We won’t know how the race would have ended had the crash not brought out the caution. Juan Pablo Montoya will look to improve off of this finish, his highest of the season.
