National Museum of the American Latino coming to D.C.
Washington, DC.,_ Latinos are growing in numbers and in influence in every walk of American life. So it stands to reason that like other groups before them and recently African Americans and Native Americans they would or should have a museum to call their own. As the fastest growing group in America, with many more millions poised to become citizens and to be born in the decades to come this facility is a place whose time has come. This week the U.S. Congress voted 291 – 117 to create the legislation that would form the commission that will study the feasibility of the idea and of a possible facility. Although the agenda in terms of time and cost is not set the idea is set in stone. It will likely take the next ten years to get established and built. That will coincidentally be the same time line that Latino voting power truly comes into vogue. Congressman Xavier Becerra has been the leading visionary of the idea he introduced five years ago.
It is fitting that the many patriotic acts and historic contributions of Latino Americans will have a home and a way to teach our Americano colleagues what it means to have family values that cross over into extreme patriotism and yet continue to value ones native culture, tongue and customs. Keep the pot stirring!
