Cinco de Mayo at Canada College in Redwood City
Redwood City, Ca.,_ On a beautiful day to celebrate the 146 anniversary of the Battle of Puebla and the Mexican ragtag army that put a whipping on the vastly superior and better armed French troops it was also a day to enjoy culture and family at Canada College.
The Young Latino Leaders group at the college put on another in a long line of Cinco de Mayo Fiestas. Absent were the corporate beer and car sponsors but present was a genuine spirit of cooperation and unity among Latinos and non Latinos from the college and nearby communities.
The festive mood filled the student union building as music and presentations followed by a very tasteful Mexican lunch of tamales, frioles y aroz. YLS President Elizabeth Cornejo and her committee that include lesandro and Noel organized a quality event attended by a number of students joined by professors and classified college employees. President Tom Mohr was there to enjoy the festivities.
Onedream2009.org speakers Juan Carlos Arauz and David Ybanez and two others from their group gave rousing speeches about the importance of supporting the DREAM act. Public relations consultant Richard Ybarra was the keynote speaker for the day’s festivities. He emphasized the importance of supporting one another as students and community member and linked the Cinco de Mayo to everyday struggles of people in their lives and efforts. “Its all about underdogs fighting for a chance to succeed and not letting anything get in the way. When each of you graduates from a college or university I promise you it will be one of the proudest moments in your families’ lives. Cesar Chavez taught us to err on the side of action, keep your goals simple and clear and never let anyone tell you no se puede.”
