“Feliz Cinco de Maya” de parte de George Bush
Washington, DC,_ George Bush speaks a decent brand of street Spanish. He went on to correctly pronounce Mayo later in his speech. It’s just regular “GW talk” where he misstates and mispronounces words in English or any language, like any other poor student who never learned correct grammar. He may need ESL training. Nonetheless, the president held his last Cinco de Mayo Dinner at the White House for 200 guests. It’s been a long time since he last remembered Hispanic voters, like about four years. For a president who knows the border and border issues he has disappointed on many levels. His cowardice on many fronts crossed over to citizenship and immigration issues with his failure to lead his party that has become the modern day anti everything Latino party. Somehow he still makes the connection. Perhaps as an ex druggie he can relate to the thousands of poor druggies, who unlike him, are in prison today.
Be that as it may GW still knows his stuff when it comes to Latinos. He may not act on it effectively, but he knows it well. As he did Monday when he invoked friendly rhetoric saying this night was an opportunity to celebrate the two countries being “connected by more than geography.” Taking a page right out of Piolin Sotelo’s playbook he said, “We share an interest in making sure our people are prosperous and safe. In America, we deeply value the culture and contributions of Mexican Americans. The United States is a richer place, a more vibrant place because people who claim Mexican heritage are now called United States citizens. We consider ourselves fortunate that Mexico is a friend and a neighbor.”
The Bush’s know how to throw a fiesta too. They brought in the Mariachi Campanas de America from San Antonio and had Spanish singer Shaila Durcal sing “Volver, Volver.”
This is the eighth and final version of this celebration for Bush and his legacy for throwing a good party is intact. As far as results he was another snake oil salesman who fooled enough people, had a brother be governor of just the right state and stood by as a supreme court appointed by his father stole an election right in front of the American people. The guy did get 40% of Latinos to vote for him in 2004. For that he deserves credit. John McCain has a tough act to follow, not much of a performance but a great act. Time will tell if his anti Latino party or the Democratic nominee will give him a chance for his own Cinco de Mayo Fiesta at the White House.
do you have video of him giving this speech? Jimmy Kimmel said it right the other day. “Feliz cinco de maya, and mucho arigato mr roboto.”
