Latino Superdelegates have opportunity to weigh in

Washington, DC,_ Now that California’s Steven Ybarra has weighed in by calling on the party’s nominee to “earmark” at least $20 million for Latino registration and GOTV others have a chance to step up as well.

The usually “get along to go along” attitude of party delegates has to be left at the door this year. It’s time to stand up and be counted (for reals). Hillary Clinton has won the admiration and votes of Latinos this year.

Somehow she became the new Kennedy in this race. She won our hearts and votes across the country. In a reversal of roles Barack Obama has become the inevitable party standard bearer. Last night Jay Leno said “even Yogi Berra would tell Hillary ‘it’s over.’” But it’s not an easy handoff for Latinos. Take Superdelegate Jerome Wiley Segovia of Fairfax, Virginia and formerly a leader in the 2004 Dean Grassroots movement.

He captured the Latino position and dilemma very well recently. While discussing the state of the primary and the nominee he said, “A few braver souls than myself will probably endorse Obama after tonight (Indiana and North Carolina primaries). Endorsements will trickle in and the future will be more clear.” He hit the nail on the head when he added that as a Latino the question he was struggling with is whether Latinos “want to endorse a candidate with weaker ties to our community.” Therein lies the rub.
