Las Comadres Moving National Book Club Forward

Austin, Texas,_ Every Latino family and every good reader knows that the Latino community’s top issue is education. At the base of that issue is literacy and a need for more and more reading.

As long as Latinos keep raising the educational achievement levels the progress will come at an even faster pace.

Las Comadres Para Las Americas, which is in 60 cities across the country, has joined Borders Books and American Association of Publishers in creating a Latino Book Club that will meet in Borders stores in eight states.

Latina and Latino authors will be featured each month. The program commences in June and will begin at Borders’ Columbus Circle in New York with future live events planned for Arizona, California, Florida, Illinois, Massachusetts, New Mexico, Texas and Utah. Las Comadres and Friends National Latino Book Club will have Esmeralda Santiago, author of “When I was Puerto Rican” as its spokesperson. Other selections for this year will include:

June: A Handbook to Luck by Cristina Garcia (Vintage)
July: The King’s Gold by Yxta Maya Murray (HarperCollins)
August: Mexican Enough by Stephanie Elizondo Griest (Washington Square Press)
September: More Than This by Margo Candela (Fireside)
