Boston, Ma.,_ The 1988 Democratic nominee, Governor Michael Dukakis, looked great on CNN and sounded like someone itching for a rematch if not for himself then for his party.
He knows better than most what awaits any who moves forward as an unprepared candidate and their team. MSD looked like a well versed party leader when he urged his party to push forward with a serious ground campaign in the months ahead beginning immediately.
It brought back memories of Richard Ybarra, Michael Ganley, Kelly Candale, Marshall Ganz (now with Obama), Larry Tramutola, David Villarino, Mike Castro, Eddie Cuellar, Emily Saltzman, Peter Feld, Sue Turtletaub, Tara Agen, Tori Davis and many others led very similar but less supported grassroots efforts for Dukakis across the country in 1988. Dukakis was serious and animated as he urged his party to organize teams in all 200,000 precincts in all 50 states. He spoke volumes of how it was to be maligned by Republicans who fight with everything they can invent and create their own truth. He spoke highly of both Clinton and Obama and scoffed at McCain’s reported inability to get the North Carolina Republican Party to stop the untrue and unscrupulous attack ads aimed at Obama. He showed he had learned his lessons well and even today remembers what it takes to make it to the show and the victory circle.
