National SEIU battle spills into public forum in Los Angeles

Los Angeles, Ca.,_ The pitched battle being waged inside SEIU, the largest union in the country pits national president Andrew Stern against long time western powerhouse and VP Sal Roselli.

Stern is the national labor leader who lead the tearing apart of the national labor movement’s AFL-CIO so he could satisfy what his opponents say is a self serving personal quest to be the country’s top labor leader.

Roselli, who has long headed the California based SEIU UHW local and is anything but a pushover, has made a strong stand and is committed to battling Stern internally. For this Stern has sought to sanction and at least cripple Roselli’s operation. The issue will come to a head at the union’s convention this summer in Puerto Rico.

Roselli’s forces have made counter moves to defend themselves against Stern’s corporate minded move to centralize all union operations in his and his hand picked follower’s grasp.

As part of their strategy Roselli’s team is going after a large but reportedly weak link in Stern’s armor, SEIU Local 434B, an over 100,000 California based home health care worker local that Stern gave to Tyrone Freeman, who opponents say has a checkered past peppered with allegations of financial and other ethical breaches while running various operations in the south and now the west for Stern. Latinos have a large stake in this battle since they either make up the majority of the Stern/Freeman home care local and a growing proportion of Roselli’s operation. Sources say their operation is under a variety of investigations. Roselli forces say under the Stern/Freeman rule Latinos occupy few positions of power and are out in the cold when it comes to salary disparities. This one is heating up along with rising California summer temperatures.

  1. Andy Stern and selfish people like him are ruining unions for the hard working members. What an asshole I hope he goes down.

  2. This blog post reads about as bad as a Fox news story. Where are the sources? Where did this information come from? “sources say?” “opponents say” — Come on…you’ve got to give us some named source of which to hang all this information.

  3. Dianne,
Sources aren’t being named because they have to be protected. In addition we know this information to be true and wouldn’t post it if we couldn’t verify it. What do you this is the Boston Herald?

  4. i hope andy and ALL his friends go down! Dianne do you ask CNN where they get their sources? i dont think so. with that thank you for reporting this and i hope more news sites pick this up.

  5. Andy Stern had a mental breakdown after a seripos persona family and as a result the entire union movement has had to deal with his brand of unionism. The person who worries about the “sources” for his deeds should look at the outcome of Sterns work. The break up of the AFL-CIO and a much weaker union base in the climate of an anti-union administration which has done everything in its power to weaken unions and Stren did it for free…
