Senator Gil Cedillo takes DREAM Actions to Redwood City

Redwood City, Ca.,_ This past Saturday Immigrant Driver’s License and DREAM Act author and champion Los Angeles State Senator Gil Cedillo was the keynote speaker at the Tenth Anniversary Celebration of the Bay Area Gardeners Association (BAGA). Over 300 people attended the event that commemorated their winning “battle of the blowers” ten years ago in Menlo Park. The association formed around that issue and has gone on to become a key Latino voice in the Mid-Peninsula area. Cedillo was thanked and feted by the largely immigrant based association members, their families and friends for his years of leadership and perseverance on all Latino and immigrant issues. He shared how his idea started during his first legislative campaign for assembly “in an alley in East LA when immigrants without licenses were getting their cars towed and having difficulty getting them out and paying fines.” Cedillo also voiced optimism on his legislation finding its way to passing sometime in the future. “When Barack Obama, who I support and believe will be the next president, says on national television that he is for these issues that is big progress.” He was joined by Redwood City Councilwoman Alicia Aguirre and Assemblyman Ira Rushkin.

Earlier in the day Cedillo shared his message of hope and prosperity with two dozen Redwood City community leaders and students from Canada Community College. He was struck by the “voice” that recent college graduate Andrea Garcia has become on the immigration struggle of her own family. Garcia recently gave a moving and powerful “Si se puede” speech at Redwood City’s annual Cesar Chavez breakfast. Canada College President Tom Mohr met with Cedillo and invited him to the college to inspire his student body which is now 60% Latino. All arrangements for the “Cedillo tribute day” were handled by Ybarra Company – Latino Public Affairs.
