Ump got it Wrong
Last night in the last of three games in the Subway Series between the New York Mets and Yankees, Carlos Delgado appeared to hit a home run. However home plate umpire Bob Davidson overruled third base umpire Mike Reilly and called the ball foul. Surprise, surprise and Umpire made a bad call. I never would have believed this story if the umpire himself didn’t say that he “[expletive] up the call.”
Davidson readily admitted his mistake to reporters after the game.
“I [expletive] it up. I’m the one who thought it was a [expletive] foul ball. I saw it on the replay. I’m the one who [expletive] it up so you can put that in your paper,” Davidson said. “Bolts and nuts, I [expletive] up. You’ve just got to move on. No one feels worse about it than I do.”
In all my life playing and watching sports I have never seen an umpire get a call wrong admit they made a mistake. This play may be the one that pushes Major League Baseball to institute instant replay as soon as possible. Not due to the fact that human error needlessly happens all the time in sports and can effect the outcomes of games, but because we can’t have umpires or refs actually admitting that they suck at their jobs.
