Washington, DC, _ Ol’ John McCain has learned his craft well. Not that of a politician but that of a military man. True to form McCain this week took a direct run at getting the jump on Obama in setting the debate and agenda for their upcoming general election match up when he called for Obama to join him in a series of (ten) joint Town Hall meetings with his younger, more energetic and eloquent rival. The ploy was a winner from the start for the Arizona senator. If Obama agrees to the offer it positions McCain as a non Bush type leader who has the best interest of the country in mind and if he disagrees it could somehow show Obama to be afraid or threatened by the Republican nominee. Obama is smart enough to find a way around McCain’s move but it is nonetheless a very interesting first move by the crafty military veteran who knows he does not want to let Obama set the agenda or get the advantage of an oratory based set of joint appearances. This is a precursor of moves that will be seen from now to just before the election to help McCain keep Obama close and hope for mistakes or gaffes that he will be ready to pounce on to gain advantage over the junior senator from Illinois.
