San Diego, Ca.,_ On a typical San Diego June day a fascinating gathering was taking place at the Olive Garden Restaurant at Grossmont Center this week. No earth shattering pronouncements nor any regional decisions being made this day – just the greatest gathering of Latina high school mates who have gotten together several times a year since 1973. So what was so exciting about this gathering? First and foremost it is seldom heard or seen that over two dozen Latina high school graduates from any year, or any group from so long ago, get together to celebrate life, family, love and friendship. As the one male in the group this writer was overwhelmed by the memories and stories being shared by these female members of “the greatest generation.” The “girls” graduated from high school together long before it was fashionable to do so and this week’s luncheon marked the 62nd anniversary of their cap and gown walk at San Diego High School just a few years after WWII. Some of them had contributed to the war effort when they were “Rosita – the riverter” working on US airplanes at Convair while still attending high school classes. The stories about family and friends and fun times were endless as were the beautiful hearts and faces still so full of a lifetime of accomplishments. Irene Rivas, the event organizer whispered to one guest, “We all knew each other when we were young girls and I guess we are now getting older. I want to keep this going for as long as I am able.” The guest quipped back, “Yes, but only a little older.” The thoughtfulness and caring were evident as they went back and forth about classmates who were no longer with us or who for a variety of reasons could not attend. They fussed over each others pictures of events like their 80th birthdays and went back and forth about the loves of their lives, prom night, wedding parties and even this year’s presidential election. They giggled and laughed aloud at the “Your Mexican if…” internet jokes that went around the table. The lone male guest who wrote this piece is very hopeful to be invited back to enjoy another special time with this lively and fun group of “older girls.” They are alive, well and tribute to the families they came from as well as those they raised. Viva the Logan Heights girls of 1946 and long live the baby boomer moms. Thank you for an afternoon walk thru a lifetime of family values.
