John McCain re-returns to former immigration views
Washington, DC,_ Senator John McCain is running at a respectable 34% against Barack Obama’s 61% among Latino voters even with Obama’s campaign saying he has flip-flopped on immigration and border security. In his meeting last week with 150 Latinos in Chicago he once again sounded like the Arizona senator who proposed comprehensive immigration reform that was turned down by his party’s members of congress and some Democrats who sided with them. During the meeting McCain offered assurances that as president he would push for comprehensive immigration reform. The issue will keep coming up until his position becomes clear to both Latinos and Republican conservatives who have somewhat warmed up to McCain after he assured them during a Republican primary debate that he would not vote for his original immigration proposal. It is at times amusing to watch the conservatives debate themselves and doubt their nominee signaling that ideology over victory is their goal. They should take note and learn something that McCain’s campaign offers them at no cost – he is the only Republican who did not take potshots at immigrants (code for Latinos), recognizes their contribution to our country and is the only one still standing today. The GOP conservative stalwarts are to be commended on one thing – consistency, but not on their understanding or playing of the political game. Obama understands that you must carefully choose and use your words when going thru a political mine field and those who are for McCain becoming president should not push him off balance as he navigates this summer’s “field of immigration reform dreams.” McCain’s people maintain that his position remains consistent and is based on two steps: securing the border and comprehensive immigration reform.
