Whose broad stripes and bright stars, thro’ the perilous fight,

Washington, DC._ In the first of three summer appearances before Latino groups the two would be presidents squared off, but not at the same time, before the NALEO conference here. The National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials hosted the first summer Latino audition over the weekend at the Renaissance Hotel in the nation’s capitol. Both candidates did their best to establish themselves as the “natural” choice for Latino voters by making their case on issues and relationships important to Latino voters.

John McCain focused on energy and the economy but also spoke about immigration reform that he supports along with border security. After citing his respect for his opponent McCain chided that he would have liked to have had a joint appearance with Obama in a town hall format so both could answer questions from the group. He made mention of his respect for “the contributions of Hispanic-Americans to the culture, economy and secutiry of the country I have served all my adult life.” Though he has appeared to flip-flop at times on immigration, Latinos still appreciate his long standing support for their issues. He tried to strike a balance between his support for securing the border while at the same time, “respecting the dignity and rights of citizens and legal residents of the United States.” He lightly touched on the importance of the path to citizenship which must be part of any comprehensive reform.

During his speech Barack Obama went right at the importance of the Latino vote. “This election could well come down to how many Latinos turn out to vote. And I am proud that my campaign is working hard to register more Latinos and bring them into the political process. Because I truly believe that if we work together and fight together and stand together this fall, then you and I together will change the political map from top to bottom.” Obama is still looking to establish a foothold and then traction with Latino voters who supported Hillary Clinton over him by more than 2:1 margins in large part because Latinos do not know him. During his allotted time Obama mentioned, “reform that finally brings 12 million people who are here legally out of the shadows by requiring them to take steps to become legal citizens putting them on a pathway to citizenship. I will say it now and I will say it after I’m president.” Both candidates got standing ovations from the NALEO group in their quest for voters who in the most recent AP/Yahoo poll showed Obama 47%, McCain 22% and Undecided 26%. Next up in July are LULAC and NCLR to keep the candidates on their toes and after Latino votes

This endorsement has McCain, Republicans worried

Washington, DC., As the two major party’s prepare their best stuff for the fall encounter endorsements are mostly going and coming from expected people and places. There is one, however, that keeps Republicans up late at night – Retired General and former Secretary of State Colin Powell. Rumors are running rampant in and out of the Beltway that this endorsement is imminent. Look for it to come but at a time when it will be of most value, like say right after both parties conventions which should be around Labor Day (the old general election kickoff day). If it’s a nip and tuck race this one endorsement will be huge and if it’s a yawner it will still be huge for Obama. Even though Powell lost some of his national luster in the aftermath of the “rush to war” he still has loads of military and foreign affairs credibility and after the way he was ushered out of the Bush administration shares a little less love for the party he served so well following his service as head of the military leadership.

Her staff furnished her remarks to news media across the country. Here we will highlight her talking points and make comments afterwards.

Thanked Cong. Xavier Becerra for successfully authoring the bill to study the creation of a National Museum of the American Latino at the Smithsonian.

Thanked NALEO president Adolfo Carrion for his leadership here and as Bronx Borough president working on greening the Bronx.

Thanked Arturo Vargas, NALEO E.D. for bring Latinos together at this level.

Recognized unprecedented Latino role in selection of the president of the US

Recognized value of maximizing Latino votes to influence president and congress

Praised congressional members Velasquez and Reyes for firsts

Mentioned Congressional Hispanic Caucus Chair Joe Baca

Protocol wise he should have gone first but perhaps he has been too outspoken at times in his criticism of the Speaker on Latino issues

Praised congressional members Cardoza and Solis for their roles as committee chairs

Invoked “Si se puede” con Obama as the next president

Mentioned the fight for “fair and humane immigration policy” that includes ending the immigration raids that hurt Latino children and families.

Praised NALEO co-founder Ed Roybal and his daughter Lucille who followed him to the House

As she so often does the Speaker hit on all the points. So well that she needs to schedule time with the congressional Hispanic Caucus and its leader Joe Back to get a real agenda friendly to Latinos on the books for the coming year.

Washington, DC,_ Underscoring the importance of the Latino vote in this year’s election the Big Three of this year’s presidential election will appear before LULAC’s national convention at the Washington Hilton on July 8 and 11th. Nominees Barack Obama and John McCain will both speak on July 8 with Hillary Clinton on July 11. In what has become another “Latino must event” the LULAC appearance will be an opportunity for each to make their case and set a tone for the fall election. In the Dems case they get two bites of the apple with Clinton backing up Obama as the convention ends. As LULAC national president Rosa Rosales put it, “The candidates are vigorously vying for the Latino vote. Our voting power has been an important factor in the last decade and is becoming more critical with each election, particularly in key battleground states such as Florida, Ohio, Colorado, New Mexico and Nevada. At least 9.2 million Latinos will cast their votes this November. Every year the LULAC national convention draws attention to the challenges facing Latinos. This year will be no exception. We are delighted that Senator Obama, Senator Clinton and Senator McCain will be joining us as we work on these critical issues.” LULAC is joining with other leaders and organizations from across the country to inspire, inform and turnout a historic high watermark of Latino voters this November – and that can only be good for all of us!

Washington, DC.,_ With a handful of exceptions Latinos are still not “feeling the love” that it takes to build a lasting relationship thru mutual respect and trust with Senator Barack Obama. It is true that he is now, at the summer starting gate, running out front with a big lead and his fundraising and organizing crews seem to be going at full throttle. There is still a leak in the Obama ship of state when it comes to his weak relationship with Latinos. There may be no other show in town, unless McCain suddenly wakes up and finds he can appeal to Latinos in a big way, but the Illinois senator needs to understand and perhaps learn that the Latino community has survived without him or any party holding them up for a long time and can do so for however long necessary. Obama does not understand Latino pride and respect. If we are not invited to a party it’s very simple – we do not attend!

This week the Latino media corps joined a chorus of Latino voices from across the country asking “donde esta Obama” and wondering if Dolores Huerta was right during the primaries when she said “all Latinos know about him is ‘como se llama’ (what’s his name).” Writers, bloggers and others have already noted that there is little to know connection between them and the Obama campaign. There is not even much of an effort to fake it. A column this week be Gebe Martinez highlighted the Obama Latino gap by very simply stating, “In a week when Obama was appealing to Hispanic members of Cogress to be as loyal to him as they were to his former Democratic rival, New York Sen. Hillary Clinton, his campaign was experiencing a major disconnect with the reporters who communicate to the community.” Martinez’ column pointed out that last month La Opinion’s Pilar Marrero weighed in on the topic writing, “Usually, to do the job, reporters need a constant and accessible contact person in the campaign. In Obama’s case, this has been virtually impossible: there is not – nor has there ever been – regular communication with the Hispanic press. One wonders what might happen in the general election campaign, and then in an eventual Democratic presidency, if indeed they win in November.” Is there a pattern here? How do we “splain” to our community the January rejection of Cesar Chavez’ grandchildren’s endorsement and last week’s long distance telephone endorsement call with the UFW that ended in “Si se puede.” Cesar Chavez would non violently spank him for that one. Senator, you have a Latino gap – best bet is to close it!

Denver, Colo.,_ He may be an aging icon but consumer rights advocate and independent presidential candidate Ralph Nader can still pick em up and put them down, in this case down on Obama whom he accused of “talking white” to appeal to “white guilt.” Nader says he is running again this year because both major parties are just too comfortable with corporations. He says the only difference between Obama and the other Dems who ran is that he is black. Nader said, “I haven’t heard him have a strong crackdown on economic exploitation in the ghettos. Payday loans, predatory lending, asbestos, lead. What’s keeping him from doing that? Is it because he wants to talk white? He doesn’t want to appear like Jessie Jackson? He wants to show that he is not a threatening, another threatening African-American politician. Basically, he is coming on as someone who is not going to threaten the white power structure, whether it’s corporate or whether it’s simply oligarchic. And they love it. Whites eat it up.”

Austin, Texas,_ The pursuit and promotion of Latinos in and by the media has been an elusive endeavor for as long as one can remember. The progress that has been made was not accidental. The efforts of people like Maggie Rivas-Rodriguez are valued by all of us and for that and many more reasons the selection of this associate professor of journalism for induction into the Hispanic Journalist’s Hal of Fame is great news that should be heralded across the nation. One of the founders of the National Association of Hispanic Journalists in 1982, Rivas-Rodriguez has spent a career moving and motivating a worthy and worthwhile agenda. Recently you could find her on the frontlines of the battle to have Latinos included in the 14 hours of WWII coverage in Ken Burns PBS documentary “War”. Her public outrcry and efforts led to Latinos getting some well deserved, yet still unrepresented, coverage in the documentary. Had Burns or PBS been seriously interested in “finding” Latinos from WWII they could have or should have found there way to Rivas-Rodriguez whose Oral History Project had over 650 Latino WWII stories in hand.

Her work on this one project was unprecedented and captured the substance and heart of the Latino American experience that no Latino bashers can withstand. The country is better off because of Latino contributions and Latinos are better off due to Maggie Rivas-Rodriguez. Gracias y felicitaciones.

Washington, DC,_ Since winning the Democratic Party nomination outright a few weeks ago Senator Obama has been on the move since he knows that to halt or even mini vacationing could lead to disaster. The deft lefty knows his way around the basketball court and is beginning to show, though still late, a good feel and “touch” for reaching the Latino community that has evaded him for most of this political season. It seems his moves are all good these days and adding up to offensive points for his side. David Sedeno of the Star Times agreed with some of what LEL wrote last week on this newly and “just in time” found Latino direction. Meeting with the Latino caucus was a great start as was hiring Patty Solis Doyle, former Clinton campaign head who was scapegoated early on by the Clintons for their overall poor play in the early primary season as chief of staff to the yet unnamed VP selection. Sedeno adds that “Clintonistas are seeing the appointment as a slap in the face to their candidate and a clear message that Clinton, despite her pledge to support Obama, will never be on the ticket.”

As Sedeno agrees it is obvious that Solis Doyle’s value and capital is her ties to the Latino community. Add this weekend’s meeting with LA mayor Antonio Villaraigosa and other moves to follow and you have the beginning of la nueva estategia Obama con los Latinos! The sharp minded Illinois senator will do well to continue being upfront about not having done a good job with Latinos and to reaching out to even those who most strongly opposed him or supported Clinton in the primaries. He cannot let McCain get near the 40% mark with Latino voters.

Cow Parade Lala Tijuana 2008 – Opened May 25, 2008 in the city of Tijuana. 20 local artists and 50 others from around México contributed to the art show, with themes that are current and relevant to the people of Baja California. Some made political statements like Border Conflict Vaca, some paid homage to other Mexican artist like Frida Cowlo, and others showed their passion for futbol like Chivaca. The Cow Parade started in 1998 and has made stops around the world including Chicago, New York, London, Tokyo and Barcelona, among others. The art show is helping to revive the art scene and promote peace in Tijuana, which is especially timely in the wake of all the negative recent press. The exhibit is appropriately sponsored by Grupo Lala Dairy, the largest dairy in Mexico and runs until July 25, 2008.
